The purpose of this unit is look at literary elements/rhetoric devices and how a writer uses these literary and devices to enhance a story. We will also look at theme or the main point that the author is trying to get through to his audience.
This is relevant because students will need these skills when they write in the future as well when they read in the future whether it be a short story or a news article on Yahoo News.
Not only will literary elements help students with language skills, these devices will help them in life. For example, literary elements such as conflict will help students identify and interpret the many conflicts we have in life. Another element, characterization, helps us identify traits of characters in literature. This is helpful when analyzing people in real life situations for those you can trust and rely on to those who may have various issues that may hinder your or their happiness.

The formative and summative assessment for this unit also resembles part three of the New York State Regents Exam that my tenth grade students will take next year as juniors.
I focus on science fiction in this unit because I feel science fiction opens the mind and makes us think about our future as well as the past, especially in our technology-based world.
