Literary terms: allusion
Allusion: a reference designed to call something to mind without mentioning it directly; an indirect or passing reference.
Example:
The Matrix
Repeatedly, Trinity and Morpheus make references to Alice in Wonderland.
-Trinity tell Neo to follow the white rabbit
-Morpheus asks Neo if he wants to go down the rabbit hole.
-Morpheus asks Neo if he feels like Alice.
Cyphers says: "It means fasten your seat beat Dorothy, 'cause Kansas is going bye-bye."
-This is a reference to The Wizard of Oz.
So why are these considered allusion? How do these help to move the story?
-Both are references to movies in which characters (Dorothy and Alice) move from one world to another world. Both foreshadow what is going to happen to Neo when he travels to another world.
