Return the wild: The Chris McCandless Story
The possible causes of death
What Krakauer said in Chapter 18
-Potato seeds are mildly toxic, but Chris would have had to eaten the amount the size of his backpack to die (p.190).
-Wild Potato is not poisonous and was a stable of the native diet (p.190).
-Wild Sweet Pea looks much like the Wild Potato and is poisonous, but Krakauer is sure Chris did not eat these. Krakauer had to go all the way back to 1848 to find someone who died from Wild Sweet Pea (p.191).
-Chris ate the seed of the seed of the Wild Potato, which is toxic, but, again, he would need to eat a lot of them (p.191).
-Krakhauer believes that mold might have been the culprit and, in Chris's starvation state, would have been even more toxic to him, mixed with the toxicity of the Wild Potato seeds (p.193).
