3. Who were the two sides fighting in this war? Republicans (line 5) and Free Staters (line 4). Republican were also know as the Anti-Treaty and IRA Free Staters were also known as the Pro-Treaty and National Army.
4. Why were they fighting? To understand why they are fighting, we need to look at the war that took place before the Irish Civil War. What was the war before the Irish Civil War? The Irish (IRA) were fighting England/United Kingdom in the War for Irish Independence. The war lasted from January 1919 to July 1921 when the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed.
The Anglo-Irish Treaty: The leaders of the IRA signed the treaty to end the War for Irish Independence. The treaty allowed the citizens of Ireland to determine whether they wanted to be a self-governing state in the United Kingdom (like Canada and Australia) or part of the United Kingdom. The citizens of Northern Ireland voted to remain a part of the United Kingdom. The rest of Ireland (Free Staters/Pro Treaty) voted to be a self-governing state of the United Kingdom. They thought this would be a step toward total freedom from England. However, a third faction (Anti-Treaty/Republicans) was against the treaty and wanted Ireland to be a self-governing country free of the United Kingdom right then and there.
The Civil War between Free Staters (Pro-Treaty) and Republicans (Anti-Treaty) lasted 11 months and pitted brother against brother in some cases -- as in the short story. The Civil War ended with a crease fire after Pro-Treaty forces essentially defeat Anti-Treaty forces.

In 1948, IRA rebels attacked the Republic of Ireland government and announced that they believed the treaty of 1923 to be void. Violence increased through the 1960s.
The Troubles began in Northern Ireland between Loyalist and Unionist in the late 1960s and is considered by many to have ended with the Belfast "Good Friday" Agreement of 1998, but continues today. The following video is from July 2013.
